The Franklin County Coalition for Progress (FCCP) is organizing the 7th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Day of Service in Franklin County on the national holiday, observing it as “a day on, not a day off.”
MLK Day of Service is a rewarding way for families, friends, neighbors and colleagues to make a lasting impact on their community in the spirit of Dr. King’s vision of the Beloved Community.
This event is free and open to the community. Please join us! We encourage all ages to participate; Kids under 18 should sign up to volunteer with a parent/guardian/family member.
NEW THIS YEAR: In addition to the morning breakfast and program in Chambersburg, we will also host a morning breakfast and program at the Waynesboro Theatre. When you sign up to volunteer, please RSVP for which location you plan to register at that morning. Select whichever location is most convenient to you!
While the event is free, registration is required.
NONPROFITS: Submit a Service Project
FCCP is seeking community organizations to host volunteers for MLK Day of Service. Service Projects will be scheduled on Monday, January 18, 2027* to begin at 9:30am.

COMMUNITY MEMBERS: Complete a Service Project
Sign up to volunteer with us! You can sign up by yourself (to be paired with others), as a family, or as a group. Registration is free and includes a T-shirt, breakfast, brief morning program, and connection to a local service project. Kids are welcome but must sign up with a parent/guardian.

Morning Registration, Breakfast & Program
Check-in and continental breakfast will be open from 8-8:30am (this is also where you pick up your T-shirt!). When you sign up to volunteer, you will also select the location you will check-in at the morning of:

The brief program begins at 8:30am, featuring a keynote presentation from Timothy Fritz, Ph.D. Dr. Fritz will present in Chambersburg with a livestream of the program in Waynesboro.

About Our Keynote Speaker
Timothy Fritz is an Associate Professor and Chair of the History Department at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD. He has written several articles on race and religion in the early South and is the editor, along with Trisha Posey, of By The Rivers of Babylon: Lament and Justice in African American History, a volume of essays focused on teaching African American history through the concept of lament in university classrooms released in 2024.
Dr. Fritz has worked on the test development for the AP US History and African American History exams and has served as an AP reader for fifteen years.
At Mount St. Mary’s, Dr. Fritz was awarded the John Richards Award for excellence in teaching in 2025 and is the founding director of the Parker Dailey Fellowship for Racial Reconciliation, an annual study-away trip for students and faculty examining the relationship between historical memory and tourism in Charleston, SC.
A native of Dr. King’s own Atlanta, GA, he currently resides in Frederick, MD.
